Fish sticks are commonly served as an entree with a side dish. Side dishes often include fries, sweet potato fries, or mashed potatoes. Some common recipes that go well with fish sticks are fried fish tacos, salmon cakes, and pan-fried tilapia.

Homemade Tartar Sauce

-1/4 C. mayonnaise

-1/2 Tbsp mustard

-1 tsp capers, chopped

-1 tbsp parsley, chopped (optional)

-1 tsp garlic (minced) -(or 1 clove)

-salt and pepper to taste

Directions: In a small bowl mix all the ingredients together and chill for at least an hour before serving.

Coleslaw

I like coleslaw as a side dish for fish sticks. It’s easy to make and doesn’t take too much time. You can make it with or without mayonnaise and it will still be delicious. One of my favorite coleslaw recipes is:

Ingredients:

– 1 packet slaw dressing

– 1 head of cabbage, shredded

– 4 green onions, chopped

– 2 carrots, shredded or grated

– 3/4 c. mayonnaise, plus more as needed

– 2 Tbsp white vinegar

– 1 tsp mustard powder

Directions:

Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl until combined well. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving so the slaw will have time to soak up some of the dressing. Add more mayonnaise if you want it to have a creamier consistency.

Homemade French Fries

-2 large russet potatoes, cut in thick slices lengthwise (about an inch thick)

-1/4 cup vegetable oil (you may need more or less if your potatoes are juicy or dry)

-salt

Directions:

Place your fries in a bowl of cold water for 15 minutes to remove excess starch. Drain the fries and pat them dry with paper towels. Heat the oil in a deep pot or fryer over medium-low heat. Add just enough potatoes so that they’re loosely packed in the pan, then don’t move them much while cooking. Cook them until they’re soaked through with oil and nicely browned on the bottom, 10 to 15 minutes total. Cut larger fries into smaller pieces so there’s more surface area and you’ll get crispier fries. Again, cook until browned on the bottom for 10 to 15 minutes. At this point you should have nice golden-brown french fries that are well oiled but not greasy at all. Now, turn up your heat just a little, add more potato slices if necessary, and fry them until they get crusty and brown on the outside, 5 to 10 more minutes. Finally, let your fries drain in a colander for a few minutes so that excess oil can drip off. Salt them while they’re still hot and eat them while they’re nice and crunchy!

Fish sticks are a quick, convenient way to get protein. They can be served with tartar sauce, coleslaw, or homemade french fries for an easy dinner that is sure to please the whole family. If you’re looking for some ideas on what to make with fish sticks, these recipes will be a crowd pleaser!
